Grab Bars & Home Safety in Brooklyn

This is the work we're proudest of and the work people put off longest, usually because installing a grab bar feels like admitting something. It's a forty-dollar part that prevents the fall that ends independent living.

When this is the right call

What we take on

  • Grab bars in the tub, shower and beside the toilet
  • A second handrail, or a stair rail that's gone wobbly
  • Better lighting on stairs, in hallways and at entries
  • Non-slip treads on stairs and bathroom floors
  • Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, tested and dated
  • Raised toilet seats, thresholds and small access changes
  • A walk-through when a parent is staying in their home

A grab bar is only as good as what it's screwed into

This is the one job where doing it badly is worse than not doing it at all, because a bar that pulls out of the wall does it at the exact moment someone's whole weight is on it.

A properly installed grab bar goes into blocking or studs, or into tile and masonry with anchors rated for the load. Suction-cup bars are for hanging a towel. In a tiled prewar bathroom that often means drilling tile — which is slow, needs the right bit, and is entirely doable without cracking anything if you're not in a hurry.

The free walk-through

If you're arranging this for a parent, ask us to walk the apartment while we're there. We'll note what we'd want fixed if it were our own grandparent's place: the rug at the top of the stairs, the burnt-out bulb on the landing, the extinguisher that expired in 2019, the extension cord running under a doorway.

You get the list. There's no charge for it and there's no pressure attached to it — you're free to hand it to anybody. Most of it you can do yourself in an afternoon.

For sons and daughters

We do a lot of this for people who don't live in New York anymore. You can set up the billing so it comes to you and your parent never has to discuss money at the door, and we'll text you photos when it's done.

Pricing

Quoted flat, before we start

We quote the whole job before a tool comes out, and that number is the number you pay. If we open something up and find a problem nobody could have known about, you hear about it the same day — with options and a price — before we do anything about it.
