Plaster is not drywall, and it matters
Most Brooklyn apartments built before roughly 1940 have plaster walls over wood lath. Patch that with ordinary joint compound and it will crack straight back out, because plaster and drywall mud move at different rates and bond differently.
Plaster gets a bonding agent and a setting-type compound, built up in coats. Drywall gets tape, mud and a wide knife. We check which one we're standing in front of before we open a bucket — a five-second test that determines whether a patch lasts a decade or a season.
Cracks that keep coming back
A hairline crack over a doorway that reappears every year isn't a filling problem, it's a movement problem. Filling it again achieves nothing. It needs to be cut out, taped with mesh or paper, and floated wide enough to spread the movement across a broader area.
If a crack is wide enough to fit a coin, or if it's opening at an angle across a wall, tell us before we start — that can be structural, and it needs somebody to look at the building rather than the wall.
Find the leak first
We won't close up a water-damaged ceiling until the source is fixed, because you'll be paying for the same repair twice. If the water's coming from the apartment above, that's a conversation with your neighbor, your super or your board first. We'll tell you what we think it is and come back when it's dry.
