The prep is the job
Anyone can roll a wall. What separates a paint job that looks good for eight years from one that looks tired in eighteen months is what happens before the first coat: filling and sanding, caulking the gaps where trim meets wall, spot-priming every patch and every stain, and de-glossing old oil-based trim so the new coat has something to grip.
Skip the de-gloss on hundred-year-old trim and the paint will peel off in sheets within a year. It's a genuinely common shortcut, it's invisible on handover day, and it's the reason cheap paint jobs are cheap.
Prewar detail takes longer, and it's worth it
Brooklyn apartments come with picture rails, plaster crown, paneled doors, deep window casings and radiators that have been painted over thirty times. Cutting all of that in by hand is slow work, and it's the difference between a room that looks renovated and a room that looks rolled.
Where a radiator or a door has so much built-up paint that the detail has disappeared, we'll tell you — sometimes stripping it back is a better spend than another coat on top.
Living there while it happens
Most of our painting is in occupied apartments. We work room by room, move and cover furniture rather than asking you to empty the place, and clean up at the end of each day rather than the end of the job.
If you're in a co-op or a rental with a building that restricts work hours, tell us up front — nearly all of them do, it's usually weekdays nine to five, and it changes the schedule but not the price.
Quoted flat, before we start
We quote the whole job before a tool comes out, and that number is the number you pay. If we open something up and find a problem nobody could have known about, you hear about it the same day — with options and a price — before we do anything about it.
