Handyman & Renovations in Crown Heights

Eastern Parkway splits Crown Heights into two housing worlds. North of it you're in row houses — limestone, brownstone, brick, much of it landmarked. South and along the Parkway itself you're in large prewar apartment buildings and co-ops. Which side of the Parkway you're on changes the work, the rules and the timeline.

What we’re usually working on

Limestone and brownstone row houses through Crown Heights North, a lot of it with original detail intact.

Grand prewar apartment buildings along and south of Eastern Parkway — plaster walls, steam heat, kitchens and baths still in their original footprints.

Co-ops with boards, alteration agreements and certificate-of-insurance requirements.

Large multi-generational households in parts of the neighborhood, which changes what a kitchen and a bathroom have to do.

Common jobs

What Crown Heights calls us for

  • Prewar apartment kitchen and bathroom renovation in an unchangeable footprint
  • Plaster repair and full-apartment painting
  • Restoring original woodwork, stairs and trim in the row houses
  • Work run under a co-op alteration agreement and restricted hours
  • Reworking layouts for households with three generations under one roof

Crown Heights North is landmarked in three phases

The Landmarks Preservation Commission designated Crown Heights North in stages — the first district in 2007, a second in 2011 and a third in 2015 — so the boundary is not one shape anyone can carry in their head. If you're north of Eastern Parkway it is worth ten minutes on the LPC map before you plan anything, because inside a district your facade, windows, stoop and door are all a permit conversation, and interior work needing a DOB permit is too.
