Tile & Backsplash Installation in Brooklyn

A backsplash is a one-day job that makes a kitchen look renovated. A tiled bathroom is a week and it's the difference between a room you tolerate and a room you like.

When this is the right call

What we take on

  • Kitchen backsplashes — subway, zellige, mosaic, slab
  • Bathroom walls, tub surrounds and shower niches
  • Tile floors in kitchens, baths and entries
  • Replacing cracked tiles and regrouting a tired bathroom
  • Removing old tile down to the substrate
  • Waterproofing before anything goes on a shower wall

Waterproofing is invisible and it is the whole job

Tile is not waterproof. Grout is not waterproof. The membrane behind them is what keeps water out of the wall, and it is the part you will never see again after day two.

In a wet area we build on cement board or a foam board system with the seams sealed and a liquid or sheet membrane over it. Tile set straight onto drywall in a shower will hold for a couple of years and then quietly rot the wall behind it — and in an apartment building, that becomes your downstairs neighbor's ceiling and your liability.

Layout before adhesive

Where the first tile lands determines whether you end up with a sliver cut in the most visible corner of the room. We dry-lay, find the center lines, and plan the cuts so the awkward ones land where cabinets, trim or the eye won't catch them.

This takes an hour up front and it's the difference between tile that looks installed and tile that looks designed. On a backsplash we'll walk the layout with you before anything is permanent.

Handmade tile behaves differently

Zellige, handmade subway and reclaimed tile vary in thickness and edge, and that's the point of them — but they can't be set with a standard trowel pass and a spacer. They need back-buttering, a wider grout joint and more patience.

If that's what you've bought, say so when you call. It's a different day's work and a different price, and we'd rather quote it right than rush it.

Pricing

Quoted flat, before we start

We quote the whole job before a tool comes out, and that number is the number you pay. If we open something up and find a problem nobody could have known about, you hear about it the same day — with options and a price — before we do anything about it.
