Closets & Built-Ins in Brooklyn

Prewar Brooklyn apartments were built before anyone owned this much. Built-in storage is how you get a small apartment to work, and it's the highest-value square footage in the place.

When this is the right call

What we take on

  • One shallow closet doing the work of three
  • Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves in an alcove
  • Window seats with storage underneath
  • Murphy beds and storage headboards in a studio
  • Awkward corners, under-stair space and dead hallway ends
  • Entry storage in an apartment with no entry

Built-in beats bought, in an old building

Freestanding furniture assumes flat walls, square corners and level floors. A prewar apartment has none of those, which is why a bookcase against the wall leaves a wedge of gap that gets wider toward the ceiling.

Built-in work is scribed to the wall — cut to follow whatever shape the room actually is. It gains you the two or three inches the gap was wasting, it doesn't tip, and it looks like it came with the building.

Studios are a different problem

We've gutted six Brooklyn studios, and in every one storage was the thing that decided whether the apartment worked. When one room is the whole apartment, vertical space and dual-purpose furniture aren't a nice touch — they're the floor plan.

Ceilings in these buildings are often nine or ten feet and the top three are almost always empty. That's a full wall of storage nobody is using.

Renting?

A lot of this can be done so it comes out cleanly at the end of a lease — freestanding units scribed to fit, tension-mounted systems, and patch-and-paint on the way out. Tell us it's a rental and we'll build accordingly.

Pricing

Quoted flat, before we start

We quote the whole job before a tool comes out, and that number is the number you pay. If we open something up and find a problem nobody could have known about, you hear about it the same day — with options and a price — before we do anything about it.
